The Lightning Goldfish
Barnaby was a bear who loved many things—honey, naps, and climbing tall trees. But there was one thing he didn't love: water. While other bears splashed and played in the river, Barnaby stayed on dry land, watching sadly.
One hot afternoon, a storm gathered. Thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck the old pond nearby, but instead of burning, it sparkled with magical colors. Barnaby crept closer, his curious paws carrying him to the water's edge.
There, swimming in glowing circles, was the most beautiful goldfish he had ever seen. Her scales shimmered like the lightning that had just danced through the sky.
"Hello!" squeaked the goldfish. "I'm Goldie. The lightning gave me special powers—now I can talk! And I can grant one wish to anyone brave enough to swim with me."
Barnaby's heart pounded. Swimming? With him? He was a bear who was afraid of water!
"I... I can't swim," Barnaby admitted, hanging his head. "I'm too scared."
Goldie swam closer. "That's okay! Being scared doesn't mean you can't be brave. Bravery is being scared and doing it anyway. I'll be right here with you."
Barnaby looked at the water. His knees trembled, but something about Goldie's trusting eyes made him feel stronger. Slowly, carefully, he stepped into the pond. The cool water felt wonderful! Goldie guided him, showing him how to paddle his big furry paws.
Soon, Barnaby was swimming! He laughed and splashed, feeling lighter than he ever had on land. He and Goldie played until the stars came out, becoming the best of friends.
"What's your wish?" Goldie asked as Barnaby dried off.
Barnaby smiled. "I don't need a wish. I already got the best gift of all—friendship, and the courage to try something new."
And from that day on, whenever Barnaby went swimming, Goldie was always there, and together they showed all the other animals that the best adventures start with being brave enough to try.
