The Lightning Garden

Emma hated spinach. Every time her mom served it, she made a yucky face and pushed it away. 'It's just leaves,' she'd grumble.

One stormy evening, Emma watched through the window as raindrops danced on the glass. Suddenly—FLASH! A bolt of lightning struck her backyard garden, right where her mom had planted spinach weeks ago.

Emma ran outside in her yellow rainboots, splashing through puddles. The spinach patch was glowing! Tiny green leaves sparkled like emeralds. As she watched, the plants began to grow taller and taller, twisting into a spiral staircase that reached up to the clouds.

'Whoa,' Emma whispered. She climbed the first step, and it felt firm beneath her feet. Up and up she went, past birds' nests, through a rainbow, until she reached a floating garden in the sky.

There, a friendly dragon made entirely of water droplets was waiting. 'Hello!' it bubbled. 'I've been lonely for three hundred years. Will you be my friend?'

Emma nodded. 'I'm Emma. What's your name?'

'Splash!' the water dragon said happily. Together they played tag among the clouds, slid down rainbows, and had a picnic with cupcakes that tasted like sunshine.

'Why did the lightning bring me here?' Emma asked.

'Spinach touched by lightning becomes a bridge between worlds,' Splash explained. 'But only pure hearts can see the magic. You judged the spinach before really knowing it. Magic hides in unexpected places.'

Emma felt her cheeks get warm. She'd been wrong about the spinach—and wrong about lots of things she thought she didn't like.

When it was time to go home, Splash gave her a hug that felt like a warm shower. 'Visit anytime. But remember—magic is everywhere, if you're brave enough to look.'

Emma slid down the spinach staircase, which had returned to normal size. At dinner that night, she ate every bite of her spinach.

'Mom,' she said with a smile, 'you know what? Spinach is pretty amazing.'

And in her pocket, she kept a tiny glowing leaf, just in case she wanted to visit her friend Splash again.
