The Lightning Garden

Lily loved her garden, but she loved her dog Barnaby more. Barnaby was a scruffy golden terrier with floppy ears and a nose that could sniff out adventure from three blocks away.

One stormy evening, while thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy, Lily noticed something strange. Every time lightning flashed across the sky, her spinach patch seemed to glow green! She grabbed Barnaby's paw and they crept outside in their rainboots.

"Look, Barnaby!" she whispered. The spinach leaves shimmered like emeralds whenever lightning struck. But the most amazing part was what happened next—a tiny, wizened old man popped out from between the spinach plants!

"Thank goodness you're here!" he said, adjusting his leafy hat. "I'm Professor Sprout, guardian of the Lightning Garden. This spinach only grows magic during storms!"

He explained that lightning-charged spinach contained something called "Wonder Vitamin"—a special nutrient that gave whoever ate it the gift of flight for exactly one hour.

"But why us?" Lily asked.

"Because Barnaby here," Professor Sprout scratched the dog's chin, "has the purest heart I've seen in years. And you, my dear, have the most wonderful imagination. Magic chooses kind souls."

Lily and Barnaby each ate one glowing spinach leaf. Suddenly, Lily's toes lifted off the ground! Barnaby floated beside her, his tail wagging in slow motion. Together they soared above their neighborhood, dancing through clouds sprinkled with stardust.

They flew until the first stars appeared, then gently landed back in their garden. The magic spinach had turned back into regular leaves.

"Remember," said Professor Sprout, disappearing between the plants, "the real magic isn't the spinach. It's the courage to try new things and the love between friends. That's the best Wonder Vitamin of all."

That night, Lily and Barnaby fell asleep dreaming of their next adventure. And sometimes, when storms rolled through, Lily would peek out the window, hoping to see that familiar green glow—and she'd smile, knowing the best magic of all was already snoring softly at the foot of her bed.
