The Lightning Friend of Papaya Bay
Maya loved to go swimming in the cerulean water behind her grandmother's house. The ocean there was special—warm as soup and clear as glass, with fish that shimmered like swimming jewels.
One afternoon, while munching on sweet papaya from Grandma's garden, Maya noticed something strange. A tiny flash of lightning danced across the water's surface, even though the sky was perfectly blue.
"That's odd," she whispered, wiping papaya juice from her chin.
Curious, she waded into the water. The lightning flash appeared again, brighter this time. It wasn't scary like regular lightning. It twinkled like a friendly star.
Maya dove beneath the surface and gasped. A small creature with skin that crackled and sparkled swam right up to her! It looked like a miniature sea dragon, but instead of scales, its body was made of pure light—tiny lightning bolts woven together into something magical.
"Hello!" said the creature, its voice sounding like raindrops on a tin roof. "I'm Zappy!"
"I'm Maya," she said, awestruck. "What are you?"
"I'm a lightning sprite! I was born during a big storm and got lost in the water." Zappy's light dimmed sadly. "I miss my home in the clouds, but I can't fly back when I'm all wet."
Maya's heart squeezed with sympathy. Being lost was the worst feeling.
"Maybe I can help!" Maya said. "Grandma says papaya gives energy to everyone who eats it. Maybe it could give you enough power to fly home!"
She swam to shore and returned with the biggest, ripest papaya she could find. Zippy took a tiny bite—and WHOOSH!
The sprite's whole body blazed bright yellow! Zappy zoomed upward, trailing a magnificent stream of lightning across the blue sky like a golden scratch of paint.
Maya waved goodbye, grinning as her new friend ascended toward the clouds. Then Zappy swooped down once more, leaving behind a small, sparkling seashell.
"For you, Maya! So you'll always have a friend in the sky!"
Now whenever Maya goes swimming, she looks up at the clouds. And sometimes, just sometimes, she sees a tiny bolt of lightning dancing among the stars—a hello from her friend in the sky.
