The Lightning Friend
Emma loved rainy days. While other children stayed inside, she pressed her nose against the window, watching droplets race down the glass like tiny silver runners. But today's storm was different.
A bolt of lightning flashed so bright it turned the whole world purple-white. Emma gasped as something tumbled out of the sky and landed in her garden with a soft plop.
She crept outside, yellow rainboots squelching in the mud. There, shivering among the petunias, crouched a creature made of pale-blue light. It looked a bit like a zombie from her storybooks—glowing eyes, crackling skin that kept flickering in and out of existence. But instead of being scary, it seemed frightened and lonely.
"Are you okay?" Emma whispered.
The creature's eyes widened. It had been struck by lightning and fallen from the clouds, losing its way home. Emma smiled and offered her hand. "I'll be your friend."
The creature—whose name was Sparkle—warmed Emma's hands like a mug of hot cocoa. Together they discovered something magical: Sparkle could create lightning-fast games in Emma's backyard. Her favorite was padel, a racquet sport Emma's big brother played. But with Sparkle, everything was enchanted.
When Emma swung her racquet, the ball burst into stardust. Each serve sent showers of tiny sparks raining down like glitter. They were running across the lawn, laughing as Sparkle zipped around like a living firework.
"You're not scary at all," Emma said during a break. "You're the most wonderful friend ever."
Sparkle glowed brighter. Emma learned that sometimes things that seem frightening are just lonely and misunderstood—and that kindness could turn fear into friendship.
As the storm cleared, Sparkle pointed upward. Home. Emma's heart ached, but she knew some friends, even the magical ones, need to return where they belong.
"Come back and play?" Emma called.
Sparkle nodded, then zipped upward on a lightning bolt, leaving behind a single glowing tennis ball that still sparkles in Emma's room to this day. Now whenever storms rumble, Emma waits by the window, racquet in hand, ready for another magical game of running and laughter with her lightning friend.
