The Lightning Friend
Leo huddled under his blanket as thunder crashed outside his window. Rain pelted against the glass like tiny fingers. The storm was the biggest he'd ever seen.
Suddenly, a blinding flash of lightning lit up his room. CRACK! The power went out. Leo grabbed his flashlight and tiptoed to the attic, where he'd heard a strange thump.
His flashlight beam fell upon something green and dusty, slowly standing up. It looked like a zombie from his storybooks! Leo wanted to run away, but something stopped him. The creature's eyes were gentle, not scary.
"Please," it croaked, "I'm not a zombie. I'm Zim, a magical toy brought to life by lightning. I've been sleeping in this attic for fifty years."
Leo watched in wonder as Zim stretched his creaky joints. The lightning flash had woken him from his long sleep! Zim told Leo about the children who had played with him long ago, about tea parties and bedtime stories.
"I've been running away from storms ever since," Zim said sadly. "But now I remember why I was made—to be a friend."
Leo realized that sometimes, things that seem scary are actually just lonely. He reached out his hand.
"Would you like to meet my little sister? She loves stories about old toys."
Zim's face lit up like a lightning bolt. "Yes! Please!"
Together, they walked downstairs, where Leo's parents were surprised but happy to meet Zim. Leo's sister, Mia, thought Zim was the most wonderful toy she'd ever seen.
That night, Leo learned that bravery isn't about running away from things that scare you. It's about giving them a chance. Sometimes, the scariest-looking things can become the best friends.
