The Lightning Friend
Lily loved thunderstorms. While other kids hid under blankets, she pressed her nose against the window, watching the sky dance with light.
One rainy evening, Lily noticed something strange in her backyard. The old television cable, forgotten by the previous owners, was glowing during each lightning flash. Sparkling blue lights raced along its length like tiny stars.
Curious, Lily grabbed her yellow raincoat and rubber boots. She crept outside just as the biggest lightning bolt yet flashed across the sky. CRACK! The cable lit up brilliantly, and something popped out from behind the bushes.
It looked like a zombie—gray skin, tangled hair, clothes that had seen better days—but this wasn't scary like in movies. The creature blinked sleepy eyes and smiled shyly.
"Hello?" Lily whispered.
"Hello," the zombie replied. "I'm Zed. I've been sleeping underground for one hundred years. Your lightning woke me up."
Zed explained he was a magical guardian who protected lightning spirits long ago. He'd fallen asleep and forgotten. Now he didn't know how to return to the sky.
Lily's heart raced with excitement. "I can help!"
Together, they devised a plan. Lily would hold the cable steady while Zed climbed up during the next lightning strike. The cable would conduct the lightning's energy, carrying him home.
"Are you ready?" Lily asked as the sky turned purple.
"Ready!" Zed grinned.
BOOM! A massive lightning bolt struck nearby. The cable blazed like a river of light. Zed grabbed hold and whoosh—he shot upward, trailing sparkles like a shooting star in reverse.
From high above, Zed's voice floated down: "Thank you, Lily! We'll be friends forever!"
Tiny lightning butterflies danced around Lily before fading into the night. She smiled, knowing magic was real, and sometimes the most unlikely friendships are the most beautiful ones.
Every thunderstorm after that, Lily waved at the sky, and sometimes, just sometimes, she'd see a familiar gray figure riding the lightning, waving back.
