The Lightning Fox's Riddle
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Rain tapped against the window as she climbed the wooden stairs. In a dusty corner, she found something wonderful—a purple velvet hat with silver stars that seemed to shimmer.
"Just for fun," she whispered, placing it on her head.
Suddenly, lightning flashed through the attic window—not outside, but INSIDE the room! The hat glowed, and Lily felt herself spinning.
When she stopped, she stood in a magical desert under a sky painted with swirls of pink and gold. Before her rose a great sphinx with lion's paws and wise, ancient eyes.
"Welcome, child," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I have guarded this land for a thousand years, but I grow lonely."
A sleek orange fox trotted from behind a golden dune. His fur crackled with tiny sparks like little lightning bolts.
"I'm Finn!" the fox said. "I was once regular lightning, until the sphinx transformed me so I'd have a friend."
Lily gasped. "That's amazing!"
"But," Finn's ears drooped, "I cannot solve the sphinx's riddle. If you help me, the magic hat will show you the way home."
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "Here is your riddle: I shine without fire, I flash without sound, I disappear in a blink, yet I light up the ground. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at Finn's sparkling fur and remembered the lightning flash that brought her here.
"Lightning!" she cried.
"Correct!" The sphinx boomed joyfully. "For showing kindness and using your mind, I grant you three gifts."
She tapped Lily's hat—it now shimmered permanently. She touched Finn's fur—the tiny sparks would never fade. And she gave Lily a small pouch that always contained exactly what she needed.
"Thank you!" Lily hugged Finn and the sphinx's great paw.
Another lightning flash spiraled around her, and suddenly she was back in the attic. The hat still shimmered on her head, and the magical pouch rested in her pocket.
Lily smiled, touching her lightning-fox friendship bracelet that appeared on her wrist. Sometimes, she discovered, the best adventures find you when you least expect them—and true friendship can strike as suddenly as lightning.
