The Lightning Fox

Maya pulled the beanie **hat** lower over her curls, wishing she could disappear into the bathroom wall. Freshman year's first house party — and she'd already spilled soda on her only nice outfit.

"You look like a terrified **fox**," said Kai, the senior she'd been crushing on forever. He leaned against the doorframe, all effortless cool in his oversized hoodie. "Small, jumpy, ready to bolt."

Maya's face burned. "I'm not jumpy. Just... new to this."

"Kai!" The shout came from downstairs. Brandon, the school's self-proclaimed **bull**, was already wasted. "Get down here!"

Kai rolled his eyes. "Brandon's been a jerk since sixth grade when he pushed me off the swings. Still thinks he's the alpha male of the school."

A crash of **lightning** shook the house. Rain started hammering against the windows, and suddenly the party went quiet. Someone's dad was yelling about getting everyone home before the roads flooded.

"Great," Maya muttered. "My mom's gonna kill me if I'm late."

"My car's outside," Kai said. "I can give you a ride. But you have to pass the test first."

"What test?"

"The **sphinx** riddle." Kai grinned. "Brandon's been asking everyone all night. Nobody's gotten it right except Sarah, and she's like, a genius."

"Okay, hit me."

"What disappears the moment you say its name?"

Maya thought for a second, then smiled. "Silence."

Kai stared at her, then laughed. "No way. You're actually... wow."

They ran to his car through the downpour, and Maya's hat soaked through, but she didn't care. Sometimes the best moments happen when you stop trying to be invisible and start being yourself — fox-like nervousness and all.
