The Lightning Fish's Gift

Lila loved the ocean more than anything. Every morning, she would run to the beach, her bare feet pressing into warm sand, to watch the waves dance. But today, the sky darkened earlier than usual.

Dark clouds gathered like giants arguing overhead. The waves grew tall and angry. Lila watched from her porch as rain began to fall — first gently, then in sheets. And then she saw it: a flash of lightning streaking across the sky, followed by a rumble that shook her windows.

"Stay inside, Lila!" her mother called.

But Lila saw something strange. A tiny creature, no bigger than her hand, washed up on the shore. It was glowing — not like a lightbulb, but like moonlight made liquid. A fish, but not like any fish she had ever seen. Its scales shimmered with colors that changed every time she blinked.

Lila grabbed her raincoat and ran outside. The rain was cold, but she didn't care.

The fish gasped, its mouth opening and closing. It needed water.

Lila scooped it into her bucket of ocean water she kept for her hermit crabs. The fish brightened instantly, swimming in joyful circles. But it wasn't just swimming — it was leaving trails of light, like tiny lightning bolts in the water.

"Thank you," the fish said.

Lila dropped the bucket. "You can talk?"

"I'm a Lightning Fish," the creature explained. "I fell from the sky during the storm. Lightning carries us from our home above the clouds to the ocean below. It's how we travel to visit our cousins who live in the coral reefs."

Lila's eyes widened. "You fall from lightning?"

"Only during the biggest storms, when the magic is strongest." The fish swam closer to the bucket's edge. "I was supposed to land in the deep ocean, but the wind blew me off course. If I don't return home before morning, I'll turn into an ordinary fish forever."

Lila looked at the stormy sea. "How can I help?"

"You'll need to swim with me to the deepest part of the bay. Hold my bucket. The lightning will guide us home."

Lila had never liked swimming in storms. But the Lightning Fish needed her. Sometimes, helping a friend means being brave even when you're scared.

They waded into the waves. The fish glowed brighter, illuminating the dark water. Lightning flashed above, and suddenly Lila could see a swirling pool of light in the ocean depths — like a water tornado reaching up to the sky.

"That's the lightning bridge!" the fish said. "Quick, before it closes!"

Lila swam harder than she ever had in her life, holding the bucket steady. The water churned around her, but the fish's light kept her calm. Another lightning bolt struck the water, and the fish leaped from the bucket, trailing sparks like a shooting star in reverse.

"Thank you, Lila!" it called as it shot upward through the lightning bridge. "Remember — real magic is just friendship and bravery mixed together!"

Lila floated in the water, watching the fish disappear into the storm clouds. The rain suddenly felt warm, like a hug from above.

She swam back to shore, cold but full of wonder. That night, she fell asleep listening to the rain, dreaming of glowing fish and lightning bridges. And sometimes, when storms come now, she looks for flashes of light in the water — just to make sure her friend is still traveling safely between the sky and the sea.
