The Lightning Dog's Magic

Lily sat by her bedroom window, watching raindrops race down the glass. Her golden retriever, Barnaby, curled beside her, his warm fur pressing against her leg. Outside, flashes of lightning painted the sky purple and white.

"Boom!" Thunder rattled the windowpane.

Barnaby's ears perked up. He barked once, then jumped to his paws.

"What is it, boy?" Lily asked, scratching behind his ears.

Suddenly, a brilliant bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree in their backyard. CRACK! The tree split open, and something tumbled out—a glowing crystal the size of an apple.

Barnaby whined and pawed at the back door. Lily grabbed her flashlight and iPhone, then slipped outside into the rainy yard. The crystal pulsed with soft blue light, and when Barnaby nudged it with his nose, tiny sparks of lightning danced around his collar!

"Barnaby! You're glowing!" Lily gasped.

Her iPhone screen flickered on by itself. Words appeared: *THE LIGHTNING CRYSTAL HAS CHOSEN YOUR DOG. HE CAN NOW SPEAK TO STORMS.*

Barnaby looked up at Lily with wise, amber eyes and spoke—in a voice like gentle rain. "Lily, the clouds are lonely. They've been looking for someone who listens."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk!"

"Only because you listen," Barnaby wagged his tail. "Want to meet the clouds?"

He touched the crystal with his paw, and suddenly they weren't in the backyard anymore. They floated among fluffy gray clouds, where tiny lightning sprites played hide-and-seek.

"Finally!" cheered a cloud named Cumulus. "We've been waiting centuries for a friend!"

For hours, Lily and Barnaby played with the cloud children, sliding on rainbows and catching snowflakes. Lily learned that storms weren't scary—they were just clouds having dancing parties.

When her iPhone beeped with Mom's text—*Come inside, sweetie, dinner's ready!*—Barnaby nudged the crystal again.

"Visit us anytime!" called the cloud children.

Back in her room, Lily hugged Barnaby tight. The lightning crystal sat on her nightstand, still glowing softly.

"You know," she whispered, "listening makes the world magical."

Barnaby licked her cheek. "And having a best friend makes everything an adventure."
