The Lightning Cable's Secret Friend
Mia loved thunderstorms. She would press her nose against the window, counting the seconds between flashes and rumbles. But this storm was different—it was the biggest storm in ten years.
While searching for flashlights in the junk drawer, Mia found something strange: an old charging cable she'd never seen before. It shimmered like a rainbow when the lightning flashed outside.
"What are you?" she whispered.
Her mother's old iPhone sat on the counter, dead for months. But something made Mia plug in the mysterious cable just as another bolt of lightning struck the power pole outside.
ZZZT! The iPhone screen flickered to life. But it didn't show the usual apple logo. Instead, a tiny face appeared—a glowing boy made entirely of lightning sparks!
"Hello!" the spark-boy said. "I'm Zap! I've been stuck in your phone since last year's storm!"
Mia gasped. "You're a real lightning friend?"
"The cable is magic," Zap explained. "It caught me when I struck the satellite dish overhead. I've been waiting for someone kind enough to help me get home."
"Where's home?"
"The clouds! My lightning family is waiting. But I need this cable to reach them."
Mia's heart raced. "What do we do?"
"Hold the cable up to the sky during the next lightning strike," Zap said. "And believe in magic."
The biggest flash yet illuminated the room. Mia grabbed the glowing cable, stood on her tiptoes, and reached toward the window just as—CRACK!—lightning struck so close it made the house shake.
The cable pulled upward like an invisible fish was on the line. Zap spun faster and brighter until—WHOOSH!—he shot up through the cable and out the window, riding the lightning bolt home.
The iPhone went dark. But Mia smiled, pressing her hand to the glass. Above the clouds, tiny lightning bolts danced in a joyful pattern.
"Goodbye, Zap," she whispered. And in that moment, Mia knew the world was full of magic—you just had to be brave enough to look for it in unexpected places.
