The Lightning Bull's Baseball Game
Ten-year-old Maya loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her glove and run to the dusty field behind her house. But today, dark clouds gathered overhead.
CRACK!
A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree at the edge of the field. When Maya blinked open her eyes, something magical stood there—a magnificent bull with a coat that shimmered like storm clouds, his horns crackling with tiny sparks of electricity.
"Don't be afraid," the bull said in a deep, rumbly voice. "I'm Thunder. And I know why you're sad."
Maya's team had lost every game that season. "I just want to win one game."
Thunder lowered his giant head. "I know a place where winning isn't everything. Come with me."
Maya climbed onto Thunder's back, and WHOOSH—they zoomed through the sky, leaving trails of lightning behind them. They landed in a secret meadow Maya had never seen before.
But the most surprising thing was who was playing baseball there. Creatures that looked like zombies—green skin, stitches on their clothes, slightly wobbly walks. But these weren't scary movie monsters. They were the Zom-Ball Team!
"Want to play?" asked a friendly zombie girl named Zara, handing Maya a bat. "We're short a player."
The game was the most fun Maya had ever had. The zombies cheered every hit, even when someone missed. Thunder played first base, using his lightning-fast reflexes to catch impossible balls. Zara taught Maya that the real joy of baseball wasn't winning—it was playing together, laughing, and making friends.
When Maya returned home, she realized something important: she'd been so focused on winning that she'd forgotten to enjoy the game.
The next day, Maya smiled as she stepped up to bat. She didn't care about the score anymore. She just wanted to play. And somewhere in the distance, she saw a flash of lightning and heard a soft rumble of thunder.
Her secret friend was cheering her on.
