The Lightning Bug Spy

Emma loved hiding behind the big oak tree in her backyard. It was her secret spot, where she could watch the world without anyone seeing her. She liked to pretend she was a spy, peeking through the knotholes like they were tiny windows.

One rainy afternoon, as gray clouds gathered overhead, Emma noticed something strange. A tiny blue bug no bigger than her thumbnail was zipping around the oak tree's trunk. It left trails of sparkling light behind it, like little stars.

"I'm on to you!" Emma whispered, slipping closer.

The bug froze. Then, to Emma's amazement, it spoke in a voice like tiny bells. "Please don't tell anyone! I'm Bolt, and I'm a lightning bug spy. I collect stories from the earth and carry them up to the clouds."

Emma's eyes grew wide. "You're a real spy?"

Bolt's glowing body flickered sadly. "I was, until I got stuck in this rain. My lightning powers are fading. Without them, I can't fly back home to Cloud Kingdom."

Emma knelt down, her heart squeezing with worry. "How can I help?"

"I need a sun vitamin," Bolt explained. "It's a special drop of sunshine that hides inside yellow flowers during storms. If you can find one, just one drop on my wings will recharge me."

Emma scanned the garden. Most flowers had closed their petals tight against the rain. But there, beneath the garden shed's overhang, she spotted a single bright marigold, still open and brave.

Carefully, Emma shook a raindrop from the marigold onto her finger. Inside the droplet, something golden swirled.

"Here," she said, holding it out to Bolt.

The little lightning bug flew onto Emma's finger and drank the golden drop. Suddenly, his blue glow turned brilliant gold, brighter than any flashlight.

"Thank you, Emma!" Bolt chirped. "You're not just a spy who watches. You're a friend who helps."

With a flash like miniature lightning, Bolt zoomed into the sky, joining the real lightning flashing in the clouds above. Emma watched him go, knowing that somewhere up there, a tiny bug was telling stories about the girl who helped a spy find his way home.

From that day on, Emma still loved to spy on the world from behind the oak tree. But now she watched for something more important than secrets — she watched for friends who might need her help.
