The Lightning Bug's Promise
Lily sat on her window seat, watching the storm outside. Thunder rumbled like a giant tummy growling, and flashes of lightning streaked across the sky like nature's fireworks. Most kids would hide under their covers, but not Lily—she loved storms.
Suddenly, something tapped on her window. Tap, tap, tap.
Lily gasped. It was a tiny beetle, but not just any beetle—this one glowed with a soft yellow light, like a tiny piece of the moon had fallen into her garden. A lightning bug!
She carefully opened the window. The beetle flew in and landed right in the center of her palm, its light pulsing gently against her skin.
"Hello there," Lily whispered, afraid to speak too loudly. "Are you lost?"
The lightning bug's light flickered twice, as if nodding. Then it did something magical—it began to fly in circles above her hand, leaving trails of light that formed shapes. First a star. Then a heart. Then... was that a smiley face?
Lily giggled. "You're showing me pictures!"
The beetle landed back in her palm and glowed warmly. In that moment, Lily knew she had found a friend. She named him Sparky.
Every night after that, Sparky visited. They became the best of friends. He would light up her room while she read, making shadow puppets dance on her walls. During scary storms, Sparky's glow reminded her that even the darkest clouds have silver linings—and lightning!
But one evening, Sparky didn't come. Lily waited and waited, looking out at the clear sky. No storm clouds, no Sparky.
She felt tears prick her eyes. Had her friend forgotten her?
Then she noticed something—her palm still glowed with a tiny sparkle, like magic left behind. Sparky hadn't forgotten. He was with the other lightning bugs now, teaching them how to make hearts and stars and smiley faces, spreading wonder across the whole town.
Lily smiled and pressed her glowing palm against her heart. Friends don't always stay close, but the magic they give you lasts forever. And sometimes, on stormy nights, she still sees a little extra spark in the sky—and knows Sparky is saying hello.
