The Lightning Bug's Magic Hat

zombielightninghat

Lily discovered the old purple hat in her grandmother's attic. It was dusty and floppy, with a wide brim and a sparkly silver band. When she tried it on, something tumbled out—a tiny, dried bug that looked like it had been there forever.

That night, a storm rolled in. Lightning flashed across the sky, and thunder rumbled like a giant tummy. Lily watched from her window, wearing the purple hat. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck the big oak tree in their yard. CRACK! BOOM!

The hat began to glow. A warm, golden light pulsed from the brim. The tiny bug inside started to wiggle. Then—TWINKLE!—it came to life!

"I'm a zombie lightning bug!" the little creature chirped, stretching its wings. They glowed green and gold, brighter than any night-light. "I slept in that hat for fifty years! The lightning woke me up!"

Lily gasped. "A zombie? But zombies are scary!"

"Not me!" The bug did a happy flip in the air. "I'm a GOOD zombie. A magic one! Want to see something cool?"

The lightning bug zipped to the window. Each time lightning flashed, the bug would glow even brighter, painting rainbows on Lily's ceiling. Green, pink, purple, blue—colors swirled around her room like magic paint.

"We're going to be best friends," Lily whispered, watching in wonder. "You can live in my hat, and whenever there's a storm, we'll have our own light show!"

The zombie lightning bug landed softly on the hat's brim. "Deal! But next time, let's make the lightning rainbow-colored. I've been practicing for fifty years!"

Lily giggled, and outside, another flash of lightning lit up the sky. But for once, she wasn't scared. With her magical hat and her glowing friend, even the biggest storms were full of wonder.
