The Lightning Bug's Gift

Maya loved running through the meadow behind her house, especially when the summer sun painted everything gold. But today was different — dark clouds gathered like giants holding hands above the hills.

"Come inside!" her mother called. "There's a storm coming!"

But Maya had seen something sparkle near the old willow tree. Something that glowed like a tiny fallen star.

She kept running, her bare feet padding against the soft grass. The air smelled like rain and magic. Thunder rumbled, low and sleepy, as she reached the willow.

There, perched on a twisted branch, sat the most beautiful bug Maya had ever seen. Its shell shimmered like captured moonlight, and when it opened its wings, tiny bolts of lightning danced between them.

"You're not scared of the storm?" Maya whispered, holding out her hand.

The lightning bug crawled onto her palm, its feet tickling like butterfly kisses. Suddenly, it glowed brighter — not like a bug at all, but like a tiny person made of light!

"I AM ZAP," the light-being said, its voice like wind chimes. "AND I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE BRAVE ENOUGH TO FIND ME."

"Me? Brave?" Maya giggled. "I was just running."

"EXACTLY!" Zap did a little spin on her palm. "MOST CHILDREN HIDE FROM STORMS. YOU RAN TOWARD THE MAGIC. THAT'S THE BRAVEST THING OF ALL."

The sky cracked open — lightning streaked across the clouds like silver rivers. Zap trembled.

"I need to go home now," Zap said softly. "But I want to give you something first."

Zap pressed against Maya's palm, leaving a tiny mark shaped like a lightning bolt. It tingled, warm and wonderful.

"Whenever you're scared," Zap whispered, "touch this spot and remember: brave people run toward magic."

With one final sparkle, Zap shot up into the storm, joining the dancing lightning above.

Maya ran home in the rain, laughing. Her palm still tingled, and she knew — whenever storms came, she wouldn't hide anymore.

Some people run from scary things. But the bravest ones? They run straight into the magic.
