The Lightning Bug Incident

Maya's neon orange Crocs were supposed to be ironic. That's what she told herself when she wore them to Jessica's party, the first big social event of freshman year. They were a statement, a conversation starter, definitely not weird.

The party was already in full swing when she arrived, bass thumping through the walls of Jessica's suburban house. Maya hovered near the snack table, clutching her red Solo cup like a lifeline, watching groups of friends laugh and dance like they'd known each other forever. Meanwhile, Maya's best friend since elementary school had somehow already found a new squad.

"Hey, nice shoes," some guy said, appearing beside her. Cute. Trouble.

"Thanks, they're ironic," Maya said, then immediately wanted to die. Who says that?

But he laughed. "I'm Tyler. You're Maya, right? English lit together?"

They talked for twenty minutes about absolutely nothing—teachers, the weird lunch food, how neither of them understood TikTok dances. Maya felt like she was glowing, maybe literally. This was it. The moment everything changed.

Then Jessica's golden retriever, Barnaby, came tearing through the party space like a furry lightning bolt of chaos, someone's phone clamped in his mouth. He knocked into Maya's cup, splashing fruit punch all down her white shirt. The orange Crocks were suddenly the least of her problems.

But Tyler didn't leave. He grabbed napkins, helped clean up the mess, and somehow made her laugh through the humiliation. "Looks like we're both wearing orange now," he said, gesturing to his own punch-stained sleeve.

Outside, waiting for her mom to pick her up, Maya texted her best friend. The reply came instantly: "Told you you'd be fine. Also, Tyler's been asking about you all week."

Maya looked down at her ridiculous shoes and smiled. Maybe being yourself wasn't the worst strategy after all.
