The Lightning Bolt's Secret Friend
Milo loved storms more than anything. When other children hid under blankets, he pressed his nose against the window, watching the sky dance with purple streaks. One rainy afternoon, while exploring his grandmother's attic, he found something strange — an old velvet hat with silver stars stitched around the brim.
"Try it on," Grandma whispered with a wink.
As soon as the hat touched Milo's head, he heard a tiny voice. "Hello there! I've been waiting for you!"
Milo jumped! The hat was talking!
"I'm a special kind of hat," the voice explained. "I'm a spy for the lightning bolts. They're lonely up there in the clouds, and I search for kind children who might become their friends."
Milo's eyes widened. Lightning needed friends? But lightning was scary!
"Not really," said the hat, reading his thoughts. "Lightning is just like you — it wants to play, but it's so big and powerful that it accidentally frightens people. That's why I spy for the friendliest children."
Outside, thunder rumbled.
"Quick!" said the hat. "Hold out your palm and make a wish!"
Milo held his palm open to the sky. "I wish lightning could play safely with me."
Suddenly, a tiny bolt of lightning — no bigger than a firefly — drifted down from the clouds. It settled gently in Milo's palm, twinkling like a little star. It felt warm, like holding a baby bird.
"Thank you for being my friend!" the little spark seemed to say without words. Milo felt it in his heart — a happy, bubbly feeling.
"Every time you see lightning," the hat explained, "remember that somewhere, a lightning bolt is waving hello to its friend down on Earth. And if you ever feel lonely, just hold out your palm and think of us."
From that day on, Milo was never afraid of storms. He knew that somewhere up there, in all that rumbling and flashing, his friend was saying hello in the only way it could.
And whenever someone asked why he loved storms so much, Milo would just tap his favorite hat and smile. Some secrets are too magical to explain.
