The Lightning Below

lightningspypyramid

Maya had been inside the pyramid for three hours when the first flash of lightning illuminated the courtyard below. She watched from the thirty-seventh floor, her reflection superimposed over the city beyond the glass—a spy in the house of truth, or so she told herself.

The corporation called itself Apex, but everyone knew it as the Pyramid. The hierarchy was literal: ground floor grunts, middle management in the middle, executive suite at the apex. Maya had infiltrated as a junior analyst, tasked with digging up dirt on their new bio-tech initiative. Her handler at the rival firm had promised this was her last job. Three months, maximum. Then she could retire to the beach house she'd been dreaming about since her divorce.

But the Pyramid had a way of keeping people.

Another flash of lightning struck closer. Maya turned back to her computer, where the decrypted files glowed in the darkness. What she found wasn't corporate malfeasance or patent theft. It was worse.

The files contained meticulous records of every employee's personal vulnerabilities. Debt, affairs, addictions, family secrets. The Pyramid didn't just employ people—it owned them. And Maya's own file was there, updated daily.

*Subject shows signs of developing genuine loyalty to team. Recommended intervention.*

They'd known she was a spy from day one.

Lightning cracked the sky open, and for the first time in months, Maya saw clearly. She wasn't a spy stealing secrets. She was being tested, her loyalty measured against the convenience of betrayal. The Pyramid didn't need corporate spies. It needed people broken enough to stay.

Her phone buzzed. *Package received. Payment transferred.*

Maya looked at the transfer—enough for her beach house, enough to disappear. Then she looked back at the file, at the hundreds of names trapped in the pyramid's stone walls.

She deleted the transfer notification. Then she began forwarding everything—every file, every secret—to journalists at three major newspapers.

Outside, the storm broke. Lightning struck the Pyramid's apex, and for a moment, the whole structure seemed to glow from within.

Maya gathered her things. She wouldn't be going to the beach. But somewhere, buried under all those stones, she'd finally found something worth keeping.
