The Lightning Bear's Secret
Lily was the best spy in her whole house. She could sneak downstairs for midnight snacks without making a single creaky floorboard. She could spy on her big brother's phone calls through the heating vent. But tonight, Lily would discover the biggest secret of her life.
A storm raged outside. Lightning flashed across the sky like nature's camera, snapping bright pictures of the dark. Lily couldn't sleep, so she pressed her nose against the window, watching the show.
Then she saw it.
In the backyard, where the old oak tree stood, something enormous moved. Another lightning bolt cracked—and in that flash, Lily saw a bear. A real bear! But this was no ordinary bear. When lightning struck again, the bear's fur shimmered with little sparks, like someone had sprinkled glitter all over him.
Lily grabbed her raincoat and boots. She had to investigate. She crept downstairs, opened the back door quietly, and stepped into the rainy night.
"Hello?" she called softly.
The bear turned. His eyes were gentle, not scary at all. He held something in his giant paws—a garden plot with bright green leaves.
"Spinach," the bear said, and Lily almost jumped. This bear could talk! "I grow it special. It helps me collect lightning."
"You collect lightning?" Lily whispered.
"Only the good kind," the bear explained. "The lightning that makes magic. When I eat spinach, I can catch lightning bolts in my fur and store them up for children who need wishes."
Lily's eyes went wide. "For wishes?"
The bear nodded. "But I'm running low on spinach, and my lightning stores are almost empty. Will you help me?"
Lily didn't even have to think. "Yes!"
They worked together all night. Lily planted spinach seeds while the bear hummed a low, rumbling song that made the rain dance around them. By morning, they had a whole garden of spinach patch.
As the sun rose, the bear's fur glowed one last time. "Thank you, little friend. For your help, I'll grant you one wish."
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—toys, candy, endless summer vacation. But she looked at the bear, so lonely in his magical lightning-catching job.
"I wish," Lily said, "that you'll have a friend to help you every storm."
The bear's eyes shone brighter than any lightning. "Done."
Now, whenever storms come, Lily sneaks outside to help her bear friend plant spinach and catch magic in lightning bolts. The best spies, she learned, don't just discover secrets—they make magical friends along the way.
