The Lightning Bear's Midnight Adventure

lightningzombiebearrunning

Emma loved her stuffed bear, Barnaby. He had one missing ear and a sewn-on nose from when Grandmother fixed him. Every night, Barnaby slept tucked under Emma's chin.

One stormy night, a brilliant flash of lightning struck the old oak tree outside Emma's window. CRACK! The room glowed purple, and when Emma opened her eyes, Barnaby was moving!

"I'm alive!" Barnaby rumbled in a fuzzy, warm voice. "The lightning magic woke me up!" He shook his stuffed fur and wiggled his paws.

Something stirred in Emma's toy chest. Her plastic zombie toy—a goofy green figure with arms sticking straight out—popped up too!

"Braaaains..." said the zombie, then giggled. "Just kidding! I'm Zed! I love hugs!"

Emma couldn't believe it. Her toys were alive!

"We have to run!" Barnaby cried, pointing to the window. "The lightning magic only lasts until sunrise! We need to find the Star Flower before it fades!"

"What's a Star Flower?" Emma asked, climbing out of bed in her pajamas.

"A magical flower that grants one wish," Zed explained, shambling beside them with stiff, funny steps. "But it only blooms during lightning storms!"

So they went running—Emma in her bare feet, Barnaby waddling on fuzzy paws, and Zed marching zombie-style—down the stairs and out into the rainy garden. The storm raged, lightning flashing like camera flashes.

"There!" Barnaby pointed to the old oak tree. Where lightning had struck, a glowing flower pulsed with silver light.

But the flower was high up on a branch. Emma tried climbing. Zed tried boosting her. Neither worked.

"I know!" Barnaby said. "Zombie strength! Zed, throw me!"

Zed's plastic arms were surprisingly strong. He tossed Barnaby straight up. The stuffed bear caught the Star Flower just as it began to close.

"What do we wish?" Emma asked, holding the beautiful glowing flower.

Barnaby looked at Zed, then at Emma. "I wish we could all stay friends forever—magic or not."

The flower bloomed bright, then its light swirled around them. When it faded, Barnaby and Zed were toys again. But Emma noticed something new: Barnaby's missing ear had grown back, and Zed had a tiny smile painted on his face.

The next morning, Emma's mom couldn't explain it. "How did your bear get fixed? And why does this zombie toy look so happy?"

Emma just smiled, hugging both her friends tight. Some magic lasts forever, even in the smallest things.
