The Lightning Bear's Gift
Emma loved thunderstorms. Her golden retriever, Buster, did not. Every time thunder rumbled, Buster would hide under Emma's bed, shivering.
One rainy evening, the sky turned an strange shade of purple. Emma sat by her window, watching raindrops race down the glass when suddenly—FLASH! A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree in their backyard.
Buster bolted outside!
"Buster, wait!" Emma grabbed her yellow raincoat and chased after him.
Under the lightning-struck tree, Buster wasn't cowering. He was wagging his tail happily at something—or someone.
A bear sat there, but not like any bear Emma had ever seen. Its fur shimmered like stars, and tiny sparks of blue light danced around its paws. The bear was holding something glowing in its large paw.
"Hello, Emma," the bear said gently. "I've been waiting for you."
Emma's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"Lightning has many gifts," the bear smiled. "One of them is giving voice to the silent." He held out what he was holding—a small amber crystal that pulsed with warm light. "This is a courage vitamin."
"A vitamin?" Emma giggled.
"Yes!" The bear's eyes twinkled. "Most vitamins you eat. This one, you keep close. Whenever you're afraid, hold it tight, and remember: even the smallest creatures can weather the biggest storms."
Emma took the crystal. It felt warm in her palm, like a tiny sun.
"Now," said the Lightning Bear, "there's someone special who needs this more than you."
Emma looked at Buster, whose tail was now tucked between his legs as thunder rumbled again.
"Buster?"
"Your dog is a brave friend," said the bear. "He ran into the storm to protect you from what he thought was danger. That's true courage."
Emma knelt and placed the crystal around Buster's neck on a leather cord the bear provided. The amber light pulsed, and Buster stopped shaking. He looked up at Emma with bright, confident eyes.
"Thank you," Emma whispered, but the bear was already fading into mist, leaving only the scent of ozone and wild berries.
That night, Buster slept through every thunder rumble, his head on Emma's feet. The courage vitamin glowed softly in the dark, a reminder that courage isn't about not being afraid—it's about being scared but doing the right thing anyway.
And sometimes, Emma discovered, the most magical things appear when you least expect them, especially during a storm.
