The Lightning Bear's Game
Emma loved baseball. Every day after school, she'd grab her glove and run to the field behind her house, her brown ponytail bouncing against her neck. But today was different. Dark clouds gathered like giant gray mountains, and thunder rumbled like a hungry stomach.
"Emma! Come inside!" her mother called from the porch. "A storm is coming!"
But Emma had lost her favorite baseball in the tall grass at the edge of the woods. She couldn't leave it there. Besides, she reasoned, she could find it and run back before the rain started.
As she searched through the golden grass, a flash of lightning crackled across the sky. That's when she saw it—a large shadow moving between the trees. Emma's heart began running faster than her feet ever could.
A bear stepped into the clearing. But this wasn't just any bear. Its fur was tangled and wild, covered in burrs and leaves, like it had been rolling in the forest all day. In its large, gentle paws, it held something round and white.
"Is that... my baseball?" Emma whispered, amazed.
The bear nodded slowly and placed the ball gently on the ground. Then it did something surprising—it picked up a fallen branch and swung it like a baseball bat, perfectly imitating Emma's batting stance.
Emma laughed, her fear melting away. She picked up her ball and tossed it softly. The bear watched it land with twinkling eyes. Another flash of lightning lit up the sky, and for a moment, the bear's fur seemed to shimmer like stars.
"You want to play?" Emma asked. "But bears don't play baseball."
But as the first drops of rain began to fall, Emma understood. Sometimes the most unexpected friendships are the most magical. She waved goodbye and ran home, her baseball clutched tight. That night, as lightning flashed outside her window, Emma smiled. Tomorrow, she'd bring an extra ball. After all, everyone deserves a friend to play with—even a lightning-loving bear with messy hair who secretly loved baseball.
