The Lightning Batter
Max loved baseball more than anything. Every summer evening, he practiced swinging his old wooden bat in the backyard, dreaming of hitting home runs that would touch the clouds. One stormy afternoon, he discovered something magical while swimming at the community pool.
When lightning flashed across the dark sky, the pool water would briefly glow with tiny sparkles, like miniature stars trapped beneath the surface. Max became the pool's secret spy, visiting every storm to watch the dazzling show. He told no one — this was his special treasure.
During the biggest thunderstorm of the summer, Max arrived at the pool and saw a girl his age sitting by the edge, watching the water illuminate with each lightning bolt. She wore yellow rainboots and a bright yellow raincoat, looking like a little storm cloud herself.
"You're the lightning spy," she said, smiling. "I've seen you here before."
Max was surprised someone had noticed him. "I'm Max. What are you doing here?"
"I'm Lily," she replied, dipping her fingers into the shimmering water. "And I think the water is trying to tell us something."
Together, they watched the storm roll overhead. Suddenly, a massive lightning strike turned the entire pool into a dazzling blue playground. For just a moment, Max saw himself hitting a baseball that trailed sparkles through the air, while Lily swam alongside him as if they were flying through a galaxy made of light.
The vision faded, but Max understood something important. The magic wasn't just about watching — it was about sharing wonder with someone else.
"Want to play baseball tomorrow?" Max asked. "I'll teach you to hit."
"And I'll teach you to swim properly," Lily laughed. "You splash too much!"
Max realized that the best discoveries aren't meant to be kept as secrets. The real magic was friendship, and like lightning and water together, some things are even better when they combine.
