The Lightning Baseball Sphinx
Lily loved playing baseball in her backyard. Every day after school, she'd grab her favorite bat — a smooth wooden one her grandpa gave her — and hit ball after ball into the air. But today was different.
As Lily swung her bat, a flash of lightning split the sky purple, though not a cloud was anywhere. Her baseball began to glow golden. Higher and higher it flew, until it disappeared into her swimming pool with a soft splash.
When Lily looked into the pool, the water shimmered like liquid diamonds. At the bottom sat not her baseball, but a magnificent sphinx with wings like sunset clouds and eyes that held a thousand years of stories.
"Young adventurer," the sphinx rumbled kindly, "I have waited one hundred years for someone brave enough to find me. My name is Zephyr, and I am the Guardian of Wishes."
Lily's heart fluttered like a butterfly. "You... you grant wishes?"
"I do," said Zephyr, "but only to those who solve my riddle. Listen closely: I shine like lightning yet have no spark. I make you strong like a superhero yet am not food. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Her mind flashed through everything she knew. Lightning shines but has no spark — wait, no, that wasn't right. She remembered what her mom gave her every morning to stay healthy.
"A vitamin!" Lily shouted with joy. "Vitamins make you strong and they sparkle in the sunlight!"
Zephyr's wings fluttered with delight. "Correct! You are clever and kind. What is your wish, young friend?"
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything — unlimited candy, a castle, the ability to fly. But she thought of her little brother Toby, who had been too sick to play baseball with her all week.
"I wish for my brother Toby to feel better so we can play baseball together again."
Tears sparkled in Zephyr's ancient eyes. "That is the best wish of all — one that comes from kindness."
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with a glowing paw. When she opened her eyes, she was back beside her pool, her baseball floating on the water. Inside the house, she heard Toby laughing.
"Lily!" he called, running outside. "I feel all better! Want to play catch?"
And so they played baseball until the stars came out, and sometimes, when lightning flashed on a clear sunny day, Lily would smile and remember her magical friend.
Moral: The best wishes are the ones we make for others.
