The Lightning Baseball League
Max loved baseball more than anything in the world. Every day after school, he would grab his glove and run to the park, even though he was the smallest kid on the team. The other kids could hit the ball so far it seemed to fly into the clouds, but Max's swings only made the ball dribble a few feet.
One afternoon, as Max sat on the bench feeling sad, a peculiar old woman with silver hair that crackled like static electricity sat beside him. She pulled something from her pocket.
"A special vitamin," she whispered, pressing a glowing orange capsule into his hand. "But this isn't ordinary. It only works when you truly believe in yourself."
Max didn't understand, but he took it anyway. That night, as he practiced in his backyard, something amazing happened. The sky darkened and lightning flashed—not in the sky, but from his fingertips! His dad's iphone on the patio table began to beep and glow as Max's bat connected with the baseball. CRACK! The ball sailed higher and higher, catching actual lightning from the storm clouds above. When it landed, it sparkled with tiny bolts of electricity.
The next day, Max's team was losing badly. It was the bottom of the ninth inning, and Max stepped up to the plate with two teammates on base. He remembered the old woman's words and thought about how much he loved the game. As the pitcher threw the ball, Max swung with all his heart.
ZAP! Lightning streaked down from the sky and met his bat at the perfect moment. The baseball launched into the stratosphere, leaving a trail of sparkles. It stayed aloft for what seemed like forever, giving both runners time to score. Max rounded the bases, his feet barely touching the ground. HOME RUN!
Max's team won, but that wasn't the most important part. After the game, Max's teammates gathered around him, not just because he'd hit the winning run, but because he'd shown them something magical—that even the smallest person could do extraordinary things when they truly believed.
And sometimes, Max thought as he looked at the sky, the magic was inside him all along. The vitamin had just helped him see it.
That night, Max found another glowing orange capsule on his windowsill, with a note: "Pass it on." And somewhere out there, another small child was about to discover that believing in yourself is the most powerful magic of all.
