The Lightning Baseball

Maya held the old, dusty baseball in her hands. It belonged to her grandfather, who said it was special. But Maya didn't feel special. She had just moved to a new town and hadn't made a single friend yet.

That evening, a storm rolled in. Maya watched through her window as lightning flashed across the sky. Something shiny caught her eye—a thick black cable dangling from the telephone pole outside. It swayed in the wind, sparking with tiny blue lights.

Curious, Maya grabbed her baseball and ran outside. The cable was glowing! As she reached for it, a massive bolt of lightning struck the pole. The electricity rushed down the cable and jumped to Maya's baseball!

"Whoa!" Maya gasped. The ball was now glowing with a soft golden light. It floated out of her hands and zipped around the yard like a firefly.

A girl with rainbow hair poked her head over the fence. "That's amazing!" she whispered.

Maya's heart raced. "I'm Maya."

"I'm Luna," the girl said, climbing over the fence. "Want to play catch?"

They tossed the magical baseball back and forth. Every time it flew through the air, it left trails of sparkling light—sometimes shaped like stars, sometimes like hearts. Luna laughed with pure joy. Maya had never felt so happy.

Suddenly, the ball stopped mid-air. A message appeared in glowing letters: True friendship is the greatest magic of all.

The cable outside stopped glowing. The baseball's light faded, but it still felt warm and special.

"Will you be my friend?" Maya asked Luna.

"Always," Luna said, smiling. "And tomorrow, let's see if your baseball has any more magic!"

That night, Maya realized something wonderful: she hadn't needed a magical cable or lightning after all. The real magic had been there all along, waiting for her to be brave enough to say hello.
