The Lightning Ball Game
Toby loved summer more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his favorite baseball and run to the park where his best friend Maya was waiting. They'd play until the fireflies came out, but today was different.
"My grandmother says there's magic in the summer storms," Maya said as gray clouds gathered overhead. "She says if you catch a baseball during lightning, it becomes lucky forever."
Toby's eyes widened. Just then, a flash of lightning cracked across the sky like a giant's flashlight. KA-BOOM!
"Let's play anyway!" Toby shouted. He tossed the baseball high into the air. Maya ran backward, eyes on the sky. Another lightning bolt flashed, and suddenly something magical happened. The baseball began to glow!
"It's true!" Maya cried. But the storm was growing closer. Raindrops started falling, big and warm.
They ran toward the pond behind the park. "We have to hide!" Maya yelled. Without thinking, they jumped into the water, still holding the glowing baseball between them.
But this wasn't ordinary swimming. The magic baseball made the water feel like warm syrup, and tiny fish gathered around them, their scales shimmering like little lightning bolts. Maya and Toby laughed as they floated on their backs, watching the storm dance above them.
"This is the best adventure ever," Toby whispered.
The rain stopped as quickly as it had started. A rainbow arched across the sky, ending right where they'd left their shoes. They climbed out of the pond, dripping but happy, and noticed something amazing—the baseball still glowed softly, like it had captured a piece of the lightning inside it.
"Every time we play now," Maya said, "we'll remember this day."
And she was right. That summer, Toby and Maya learned that the best adventures come when you're brave enough to play through the storm—and that magic is everywhere, especially when you share it with a friend.
From that day on, their baseball games were always a little more magical, and whenever lightning flashed across the summer sky, they'd smile at each other and remember the day they went swimming in a storm and caught a piece of lightning in their favorite baseball.
