The Lightning Ball
Ten-year-old Maya bounced on her toes, clutching her padel racquet. The old court behind her grandmother's house was her favorite place, especially during summer evenings when the fireflies danced.
"Hurry, Leo!" she called to her best friend, who was running across the grassy field. "The storm is coming!"
Leo arrived, panting and grinning. Thunder rumbled in the distance like a hungry dragon. "Let's play one quick game before the rain!"
They hit the neon-yellow ball back and forth, laughing as it zipped against the court's glass walls. *Bop. Bop. Bop.* But suddenly—*CRACK!*—lightning split the sky!
The ball glowed brilliant blue, then shot upward, trailing sparks like a tiny comet!
"Whoa!" Maya gasped.
"It's... it's ALIVE!" Leo shouted.
The lightning ball zipped around them, leaving trails of silver light. It nudged Maya's racquet gently, then did a joyful loop-the-loop.
"I think it wants to play!" Maya realized.
They played the most magical game ever. The lightning ball moved faster than anything they'd ever seen, yet it never went out of bounds. When Maya swung her racquet, the ball hummed with happiness. When Leo dived to save a point, the ball slowed just enough to let him reach it.
"You're AMAZING!" the ball seemed to say with every cheerful bounce.
Rain began to fall, but the lightning ball kept glowing, keeping them dry in a circle of warm light.
"Thank you for playing with me," the ball's sparkles seemed to whisper. Then—*WHOOSH!*—it shot back up into the clouds, joining the storm's dance.
Maya and Leo stood in the rain, hearts full of wonder.
"Do you think it'll come back?" Leo asked, grinning.
Maya squeezed his hand. "Every time lightning strikes. But only if we're running to the court with friendship in our hearts."
And from that day on, they never feared storms. They just grabbed their racquets and smiled at the sky, knowing their lightning friend was watching, waiting for the next magical game.
