The Laws of Motion

The corporate retreat had been Elena's idea—team building, she'd called it. Now she stood by the pool, nursing warm champagne, watching Marcus play padel with the company's newest board member. The way Marcus moved, all calculated precision and predatory grace, reminded her of how they'd started three years ago.

Back then, they'd been different people. She'd just left her husband, a baseball scout who'd chosen minor league prospects over their marriage. There'd been a dog—a retriever named Buster—who went with him. Elena still wondered which of them the dog had actually loved.

Marcus had been the fox in that scenario already: cunning, patient, waiting for the moment of vulnerability. He'd found her in the office kitchen at 2 AM, crying over cold coffee and a wedding album that wouldn't close properly. Within months, she'd traded one kind of game for another.

Now, watching him laugh with the board member, Elena understood something about momentum. Objects in motion stay in motion. Marcus was always moving toward something—another promotion, another conquest, another version of himself that shone brighter than the last. She'd simply been an obstacle he'd vaulted on his way somewhere else.

The pool lights flickered on, casting everything in underwater blue. Marcus's padel opponent high-fived him, and for a second, his eyes found hers across the water. He smiled—the same smile that had convinced her to risk everything, the same smile that now meant nothing at all.

Elena set down her champagne. She'd stopped being the woman who waited for men to choose her. The water looked inviting, dark and endless. She wondered what would happen if she simply kept walking forward, letting the laws of motion carry her wherever they might.
