The Last Update

Mara sat on the floor of her apartment, the orange glow of the streetlamp outside painting everything in warm, sickly hues. Her cat, Bast, kneaded her thigh with sharp precision, demanding dinner. But Mara didn't move.

Three hours ago, she'd been laid off. Her manager—sharp, efficient David—had done it over Zoom with the same detached tone he'd used to explain Q3 projections. The company cable that had tethered her to fourteen-hour days, to endless stand-ups, to the myth that her work mattered, had been severed with a single calendar invite.

Now lightning flickered through the window, illuminating the half-filled boxes she'd packed weeks ago when she'd first sensed the coming layoff. She hadn't told anyone. Not her mother, not Sarah, the woman she'd been seeing for six months who kept asking about her long-term plans.

Sarah. The thought hit Mara with the weight it always did—warm, terrifying, heavy with possibility. They'd argued yesterday, Sarah wanting commitment, Mara paralyzed by the conviction that everything she touched eventually fell apart. She'd walked out in the middle of Sarah's sentence, something she promised herself she'd never do.

The storm broke then. Thunder rattled the windows, and Bast abandoned her for the safety of under the couch. Mara watched the rain streak against the glass, blurring the city lights into an orange smear.

What was she waiting for?

The question settled over her like the thunder's aftermath. She wasn't waiting for another job. She wasn't waiting for the perfect moment to call Sarah. She was waiting to feel sure, to feel ready, to feel anything other than this hollow ache of uncertainty.

But certainty wasn't coming. The update would never download.

Mara stood, her joints stiff, and found her phone. Seven missed calls. The first six from her mother. The last one from Sarah, left twenty minutes ago.

She pressed call.

The lightning flashed again, and this time she didn't look away.
