The Last Transmission

Elena adjusted the spy camera hidden inside her baseball cap, her fingers trembling. The corporate boardroom felt suffocating, like a tomb where careers went to die. She'd been gathering evidence for months—her boss, Marcus, was siphoning company funds into offshore accounts. The irony wasn't lost on her. She'd spent ten years as his loyal second-in-command, the sphinx to his riddles, the one who kept his secrets.

"The quarterly reports, Marcus." She slid the folder across the polished mahogany table. "Care to explain the discrepancies?"

He didn't blink. His bear-like frame filled the executive chair, a man who'd crushed competitors with the same indifference he now showed her. "You've been busy, Elena. But curious—you never once asked about the encrypted cable running from my office to the server room."

The blood drained from her face. She'd noticed it months ago, assumed it was redundant infrastructure. Now the pieces clicked—surveillance, not just embezzlement. He'd been monitoring everyone.

"The baseball game last night," he continued conversationally. "Nice view of the city from your balcony. Pity about your neighbor's telescope."

Elena's stomach turned. He'd had cameras trained on her home. On her life.

"I quit," she stood, legs unsteady. "And I'm taking this to the authorities."

Marcus's smile didn't reach his eyes. "You think you're the hero? You're just another loose end." He pressed a button on his desk.

The door clicked locked behind her. The monitor on the wall flickered to life—feeds from every room in her apartment, her gym, even her parents' house. Years of footage.

"Choose, Elena. Your silence, or their privacy."

She walked to the window, the city lights blurring through tears. The sphinx had finally revealed its riddle, and the answer broke her. Some secrets were meant to be kept.
