The Last Summer Splash

baseballzombiepool

Marcus gripped the baseball bat, his palms sweating. This wasn't about the game anymore.

"YOU'RE IT, ZOMBIE!" Jake screamed, cannonballing into the pool with a splash that drenched everyone on the deck.

The whole party erupted in chaos. What started as a friendly neighborhood baseball tournament had morphed into this massive zombie tag game, and somehow Marcus—quiet, overthinking Marcus—was the last survivor.

"Run, run, run!" chanted the cheer squad, including Chloe, who'd been giving him those looks all summer. The ones that made his stomach do backflips.

Marcus bolted around the pool, zombies everywhere. Taylor and her perfect hair reached for him. "Join us, Marcussss," she deadpanned, arms stretched like a classic horror movie zombie. "We have snacks."

He ducked, swinging the bat—not at anyone, just for momentum. "Never!"

"Bro, just give up already," called Dylan, shaking zombie-water from his swim trunks. "Taylor's been zombie for like, twenty minutes. We're basically a zombie army now."

That's when Marcus saw it: the lone baseball on the grass near the deep end. The one everyone had forgotten about when the zombie game took over. A win condition.

"You guys are focusing on the wrong thing," he shouted, scattering toward the ball.

"What?" Jake paused mid-zombie-shuffle.

Marcus snatched the baseball. "If I hit this into the pool without getting tagged, I win everything. The tournament AND the zombie game."

"THAT'S NOT THE RULE!" someone screamed, but it was too late.

He tossed the ball up, timed it perfectly, and—CRACK. A perfect arc, splash right in the center. Zombie shrieks erupted as chlorine water rained everywhere.

Chloe was laughing so hard she fell backward into a lawn chair. "You're actually unhinged, Marcus."

"And the winner, somehow," he said, chest heaving.

Later, when everyone was drying off and the zombie chaos had settled into comfortable exhaustion, Chloe slid onto the pool deck beside him. "You know, you were kind of awesome out there."

Marcus shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Just had to show them zombies can't win everything."

"Yeah," she smiled. "Exactly."

That night, Marcus lay in bed replaying it—how for once, he wasn't the quiet one in the background. He was the guy who hit the winning shot, who made the girl laugh, who outsmarted an entire zombie army at a pool party.

Sometimes the best moments happen when everything goes completely off-script.
