The Last Summer of Secrets

bearhairspy

Julia stood before the bathroom mirror, pulling at the gray strands threading through her chestnut hair. Forty-two years old, and suddenly every change in her body felt like a small betrayal. She'd always been the one with everything under control—the career, the marriage, the immaculate house in the suburbs. But lately, control felt like trying to hold water in her hands.

The worst part wasn't the suspicion itself. It was the way she'd started spying on her own husband. Reading his texts when he left his phone unlocked. Tracking his location through that app they'd installed for safety during their anniversary trip to Napa. She'd become someone she didn't recognize, someone who double-checked receipts and monitored arrival times with the cold precision of a private investigator.

Three weeks ago, she'd found the credit card statement. A hotel room downtown. A lunch she knew he hadn't attended. He'd told her he was working late, but the location was nowhere near his office. Julia had learned to bear the weight of uncertainty in her stomach, heavy and suffocating, during every dinner conversation since.

She heard the front door open. Dan's key in the lock. His familiar footsteps in the hallway. She quickly smoothed her hair, practiced a smile she didn't feel.

"Hey," he called from the bedroom. "You ready for tonight?"

Their anniversary. Ten years. Julia looked at her reflection one last time, wondering what the woman in the mirror would do next. Wondering if she'd rather live with the lie or the truth. Wondering if she'd ever truly known the man she'd married, or if everyone eventually became a stranger to someone.

"Just a minute," she called back, and didn't recognize her own voice.

The spy in her had found evidence, but the wife in her wasn't sure she wanted to know what it meant. Some truths, she was learning, were heavier than others. And some secrets, once uncovered, could never be forgotten.
