The Last Stampede

vitamindogbullhat

Elena stared at the clinical trial results, her father's cowboy hat perched on the corner of her desk—an incongruous tattered reminder of the life she'd left behind in Oklahoma. The vitamin supplement her company was about to launch showed troubling patterns in the long-term data, but the marketing campaign was already rolling out. Bullshit, she thought, exactly the kind of her father's old curses that still echoed in her head.

Her phone buzzed. Another text from Marcus: *Dinner tonight? Wear that red dress.* The man who'd chased her through the corporate ladder with the single-minded determination of a bull in a china shop, never realizing she wasn't something to be conquered.

On her way home, a stray dog—some mangy mix of shepherd and something wild—followed her for three blocks. It reminded her of the dog her father had given his dying word to protect, the day before the stampede that had nearly killed them both. Some promises you keep. Some you bury with the dead.

Her father had taken the bull by the horns that day, literally and figuratively. The animal had already trampled two ranch hands when her father stepped between the beast and the fallen boy. He'd survived, but he'd never walked straight again. That's when he'd started taking handfuls of vitamins, swallowing the promise that something could fix what couldn't be fixed.

Now she held that same power in her hands—the ability to sell false hope to thousands of desperate people. The vitamin was harmless enough, but the claims weren't. The data showed minimal benefits, nothing like the miracle the marketing team promised.

She picked up her father's hat, ran her fingers over the sweat-stained band. Some promises you keep.

Elena deleted Marcus's text, opened her laptop, and began drafting the email that would end her career but maybe, just maybe, let her sleep at night. The dog scratched at her door, and she let it in. Some things, she decided, were worth fighting for.
