The Last Set

Elena sat alone on the bench at edge of the padel court, watching Marcus and his new partner destroy their opponents across the net. He moved with that same fluid grace she'd fallen for three years ago—running corner to corner, sweat dripping down his temples, that devastating smile flashing whenever he scored a point.

She could almost taste the papaya they'd shared that last morning in Tulum, the juice sticky on their fingers, the salt from the sea still on their skin. He'd told her he loved her that day. Then again at dinner, when the waiter brought them fresh oranges to squeeze into their tequila. He'd said it like a promise, like something solid.

Instead, it had been erosion. Slow, invisible, until she woke up one morning and realized she was standing on the edge of a cliff she hadn't noticed them approaching.

'Your turn, Elena.'

She looked up. Marcus was gesturing to the court, his shirt plastered to his chest. 'I'm subbing out. You've been running from this all week.' He meant the game, but they both knew he meant more.

She stood up, knees stiff, and picked up her racket. The grip still smelled like his hands. The motion was automatic—footwork, positioning, the sweet spot of the ball against the strings. She'd always played better when he was watching. Or maybe she'd just needed him to believe she could.

The orange sun dipped below the horizon as they played, casting long shadows across the court. Elena ran harder than she had in months, each swing a question, each return an answer she wasn't ready to give. When it was over, Marcus pulled her into a hug that felt like goodbye and hello all at once.

'Same time next week?' he asked.

Elena looked at the papaya-colored sky, at the man she still loved but no longer knew how to be with. 'Maybe,' she said, and walked away before she could change her mind.
