The Last Serve at Sunset

Elena adjusted the brim of her father's old fedora, the wool still smelling faintly of tobacco and rain. Three years since his funeral, and the hat remained her only tether to the man who'd taught her that life was simply a series of returned shots — some you anticipated, others you merely survived.

The padel court at dusk was nearly empty, save for a stray orange cat watching from the chain-link fence, its tail flicking with what looked suspiciously like judgment. Elena had been coming here every Tuesday for six months, ever since Marcus left. He'd claimed he needed space, which she'd learned was code for 'your colleague Sarah is more accommodating of my emotional unavailability.'

'Serve!' called Javi, her opponent tonight. At twenty-three, he was exactly half her age, all fluid motion and easy confidence she remembered possessing before divorce and mortgages and the weight of expectations calcified her joints.

Elena tossed the ball. Her serve hit the net.

'Again.'

The cat meowed.

She thought of Marcus's face when she'd asked him to attend therapy. The bull-headed stubbornness, the way he'd planted his feet like an animal refusing to move. 'There's nothing wrong with us, Elena. You're overthinking again.' That was his refrain. Overthinking. As if awareness were a pathology.

Her phone buzzed in her bag. Probably him. Probably asking if he could pick up his things this weekend. Probably not asking how she was.

'Focus, Elena.' Javi smiled, unaware he was echoing her father, her mother, every person who'd ever told her she was too much in her head. The hat slipped. She pushed it back up.

She served again. This time, the ball cleared the net, clipped the back glass, and dropped perfectly into the corner. Javi couldn't return it.

'Finally,' he said, and something in his tone suggested he saw more than just the game — saw the woman beneath the hat, the one rebuilding herself one imperfect serve at a time.

The cat stretched and disappeared into the shadows. Elena adjusted the hat, exhaled, and prepared to receive.
