The Last Pyramid Game

zombiebearhatpyramidpadel

The corporate pyramid scheme of endless meetings had turned Elena into something resembling a zombie. She sat at her desk at 7 PM, staring at the spreadsheet that refused to make sense, wearing her father's old fedora like a shield against the fluorescent lights. It had been three years since she'd felt anything resembling passion. Three years since Mark left. Three years of becoming this hollowed-out version of herself, navigating the pyramid of corporate advancement without ever quite reaching the next level.

Then she saw him across the padel court—Liam from accounting, wearing a ridiculous baseball cap backward, sweat dripping down his temple as he smashed the ball against the wall. Something about his raw intensity, the way he moved like he was fighting a war nobody else could see, made her feel alive for the first time in months.

"You play?" he asked afterward, catching her staring.

"Not anymore."

"You should. It's the only thing that keeps me from going full bear mode in client meetings."

She laughed, and the sound surprised her. They started playing Thursday evenings. The racquet became an extension of her arm, the court a sanctuary where she could scream without speaking. Liam told her about his ex-wife, about his daughter who only called when she needed money. She told him about the pyramid scheme her life had become—career, relationship, all of it.

Three months in, they found themselves in the parking lot after midnight, the air thick with rain and something else. His hand brushed hers, and she didn't pull away.

"The hat," he said, touching the fedora's brim. "It doesn't suit you anymore."

She took it off. The wind caught her hair, and for the first time in years, she felt something shift inside—the zombie waking up, the bear emerging from hibernation.

"No," she said. "I suppose it doesn't."

The pyramid would still be there tomorrow. The meetings, the spreadsheets, the endless climb. But maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to be dead inside to navigate it.
