The Last Padel Match

zombiepadelfoxsphinxspy

Elena hadn't meant to become a corporate zombie, but three years of M&A work at Sterling Capital had done what her mother's death couldn't—numbed her completely. She moved through meetings like a ghost, signing documents that destroyed companies she'd never visit.

Then came the padel tournament.

Marcus from Compliance had organized it—charity, networking, whatever. Elena almost declined until she saw who'd partnered with James, the new senior partner. A redhead with eyes too old for her face. A fox, Elena thought, watching the woman laugh at something James said.

The match was at sunset. Glass walls, orange light, the rhythmic thwack of balls against concrete. Elena played aggressively, channeling everything into each serve. The fox—Claire, she learned—matched her, volley after volley, until they collapsed against the wall, breathless.

"You're good," Claire said, wiping sweat from her forehead. "Better than James. He only plays to be seen."

Elena laughed, bitter. "Everything here's about being seen."

Claire's expression shifted. "Not everything." Her voice dropped. "The Antigua merger. The shell companies in the Caymans. You've seen the files."

Elena froze. She had. She'd signed them anyway.

"I'm with regulatory enforcement," Claire continued, still smiling, still casual. "We've been building a case for months. James is the linchpin. But we need someone on the inside to testify."

A spy. Elena had almost married one in college, before she learned how lies erode everything.

"Why me?" Elena asked, though she already knew.

"Because you still care." Claire's eyes searched hers. "Because you haven't been a zombie as long as you think."

The riddle hung between them like a sphinx's challenge: destroy her career or destroy herself.

Elena watched James across the court, laughing with someone from Legal. She thought of the signatures in her handwriting, the companies dismantled, the life she'd almost completely lost.

Then she looked at Claire—the fox, the spy, the woman who'd seen her.

"Tomorrow," Elena said. "I'll bring the files."

Claire nodded, once. "Tomorrow."

As they walked off the court, side by side, Elena felt something stir inside her—not much, but something. A beginning.
