The Last Padel Match

zombiepalmpadelspy

Elena wiped her sweating palms against her tailored slacks, the fourth time in as many minutes. The merger announcement was scheduled for 2 PM, and her stomach churned with a mixture of excitement and dread. Three years of grinding toward this moment, and she felt less like a triumphant executive and more like a zombie—alive, technically speaking, but moving through her days on autopilot, fuelled by caffeine and adrenaline.

'You're up, Elena.' Marcus waved from padel court number three, his grin too bright, his enthusiasm too forced. Their weekly matches had become a ritual, part corporate networking, part desperate escape from the fluorescent-lit office.

As she stepped onto the court, racket in hand, Elena noticed something odd. Marcus kept glancing at his phone between volleys, typing rapidly with his thumb. His game was off too—uncharacteristically sloppy, missing shots he'd normally return effortlessly.

'Everything good?' she asked after he shanked an easy ball into the net.

'Just finalizing some personal business,' he said, but his eyes darted away from hers.

Later that evening, drinking overpriced wine at her kitchen counter, Elena's phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number: Your friend Marcus has been feeding competitor intel on your merger for six months. Check his email if you don't believe it.

Her palm hovered over the screen, trembling. She'd known Marcus for seven years. They'd celebrated promotions together, mourned failed projects, served as each other's emotional support through two rounds of layoffs. But as she replayed the day's padel match in her mind—his nervous glances, the sloppy game, the constant texting—the pieces clicked into place with sickening clarity.

She wasn't just tired anymore. She was something far worse: alone in a world where everyone had a price, and even your closest friends might be wearing masks.
