The Last Notification

Maya's palm hovered over the screen, her thumb poised to respond, but the words had died in her throat three hours ago. The iPhone glowed with his last message—*I can't do this anymore*—and somehow the device felt heavier in her hand than any relationship should weigh.

Barnaby, their golden retriever, nudged her knee with his wet nose, whimpering. He sensed the shift in the apartment's atmosphere, the way dogs always do before the human world collapses. Outside, LA traffic hummed its constant evening song, oblivious to the tiny implosion happening on the seventh floor.

She ran her fingers through her hair—his favorite feature, he'd said countless times, burying his face in it after they made love. Now it felt like a stranger's compliment, something that belonged to a previous version of herself. The version that still believed in *forever*.

Her phone buzzed again. Another notification from work. *Slack: Sarah mentioned you in #marketing-deadlines.*

The juxtaposition was almost funny. Her professional life demanded immediate attention—crises were mounting, budgets were due, the team needed leadership. Meanwhile, her personal life had quietly ended via text message, and no one at work would ever know. She'd show up tomorrow, hair blown smooth, palm perfectly steady during presentations, iPhone tucked away in her bag like a secret wound.

Barnaby rested his chin on her foot, watching her with those liquid brown eyes. In two weeks, she'd have to decide who kept him. They'd never discussed that scenario. It had always been *their* dog, *their* apartment, *their* future.

The screen dimmed. His message disappeared into the void of read receipts and unanswered questions. Maya set the phone on the coffee table and buried her face in Barnaby's fur, letting herself finally breathe.
