The Last Neon Breakfast

bullorangelightning

The bull market had finally collapsed, taking Marcus's career, his pride, and half his net worth with it. Now he sat in a diner at 4 AM, stirring cold orange juice with a plastic straw, watching his wife of seventeen years pretend to read a newspaper she'd already memorized.

Outside, lightning fractured the sky—violent, beautiful cracks of white that illuminated the deep wrinkles around Elena's eyes. She hadn't looked at him since he'd confessed the layoffs. Not theč£å‘˜ęœ¬čŗ«. The other thing.

"You said it was just flirting," she said, not looking up from the sports section.

"It was."

"Then why'd she text you at midnight?"

Marcus watched the orange liquid catch each flash of lightning through the window. The same juice they'd bought every Sunday for fifteen years. Some habits survived even when everything else burned.

"Because I'm lonely, El. Because you've been sleeping in the guest room since 2019. Because we're both waiting for the other person to end it first."

She finally looked at him. Her eyes were the same brown that had made him miss a college lecture in 2003, made him walk across a frozen campus just to sit beside her. Now they just looked tired.

"I wanted you to fight for us," she said softly. "Instead, you made yourself smaller. You let that job eat you alive, and then you let someone else make you feel seen."

Another bolt of lightning seared the clouds. The neon sign above the diner buzzed and dimmed.

"I'm going to my sister's," Elena stood up, smoothing a skirt that had seen better decades. "Not forever. Just until you figure out if you still want a wife, or just someone who hasn't left yet."

Marcus watched her walk to the register. The bull market was gone. The marriage was suspended. But as he watched lightning write temporary constellations across the predawn sky, something finally loosened in his chest. He didn't know if they'd survive this. He didn't know if he deserved to.

But for the first time in years, he was ready to find out.
