The Last Mile Before Dawn

Running at 4 AM was the only time Marcus felt alive anymore. The rest of his existence had become a slow, suffocating march through the fluorescent-lit corridors of the insurance firm where he'd spent fifteen years watching his ambition decay. He was thirty-eight, going on dead, moving through meetings and emails like the others—the workplace zombies, shuffling between cubicles, eyes glazed over, hearts barely beating beneath their button-down shirts.

That Thursday morning, fog hung low over the river path where Marcus ran. His breath came in ragged gasps, each one a small rebellion against the gray sameness of his days. He pushed harder, his sneakers slapping the pavement in a rhythm that felt almost like prayer.

Then he saw it.

A fox stood at the edge of the trail, its coat burning copper against the mist. It watched him with impossible stillness, amber eyes holding something like ancient wisdom, or maybe just wild indifference. Marcus slowed, then stopped, his chest heaving. The fox didn't run. It simply regarded him—this sweating, desperate human in his technical fabrics and existential crisis—and then, with a casual flick of its tail, turned and vanished into the shadows.

Marcus stood there in the pre-dawn gray, the encounter hitting him with the force of a revelation. That creature was more alive in those thirty seconds than he'd been in years. It wasn't running from anything. It wasn't running toward anything. It just *was*.

His phone buzzed in his pocket—an early email from corporate, something about Q3 deliverables. Marcus pulled it out and looked at the screen, seeing it now for what it was: another small death disguised as responsibility.

He turned around and started running back, but something had changed. The rhythm was different. Not away from, not toward, but simply *through*. The fox had shown him that living wasn't about the destination. It was about the wild, improbable fact of being here at all.

Marcus deleted the email without reading it. Somewhere in the darkness, a fox was running, and for the first time in years, he was running too.
