The Last Match
The orange sun dipped low over the padel court as Marcus adjusted his grip, sweat slicking his hair against his forehead. Three years of marriage, three years of Sunday matches at the俱乐部, and Elena still wouldn't stop hitting those damn lobs.
"You're not even trying," she said, smacking another ball high into the corner where he couldn't reach it.
"I'm trying to enjoy my weekend, Elena. Not everything's a competition."
She laughed, bitter as olive pits. "That's rich, coming from the man who turned our anniversary dinner into a negotiation about whose career was more demanding."
The game ended 6-2, her victory. They stood at opposite sides of the net, the silence between them heavier than any trophy they'd never win.
Later, at the pool, she sat reading while he swam laps. He watched her from underwater—her fingers pressing against the pages, her palm shading her eyes from the fading light. They'd come here to fix things. The weekend package promised romance and renewal, but mostly they'd just proven they were excellent at avoiding each other.
He surfaced, gasping. She didn't look up.
"My mother called," she said when he climbed out, dripping. "She asked why we haven't set a date for the ceremony. We've been married three years, Marcus, and we still haven't had a wedding."
"We said—"
"We said a lot of things." She closed her book. "I want the wedding. I want the dress, the cake, the ridiculous ceremony. I want to know you're not just marking time until something better comes along."
He stood there, shivering in the evening breeze, while she waited. The pool lights flickered on, casting rippling shadows across her face.
"Okay," he said finally. "Let's do it."
She studied his palm where he'd braced himself against the lounge chair—callused from the racquet, from the grip he'd been holding too tight for too long.
"You mean it?"
He looked at her really looked at her, at the way her hair curled damp at her neck, at the hope she wouldn't quite let herself show.
"I mean it," he said. "But I'm not letting you win at padel anymore."
Elena smiled. "We'll see about that."
