The Last Match

lightningpadelorange

The lightning crackled across the sky as Elena served, her orange dress bright against the storm-darkened court. She and Marcus had been playing padel every Thursday for three years, a ritual that outlasted their marriage by eight months.

Marcus returned the ball with practiced ease, his movements fluid even as rain began to speckle the synthetic turf. They'd met on this court, back when she was his boss's daughter and he was the architect with draft-dust on his cuffs. Now she was his ex-wife, and he was just the man who still knew exactly how to angle a shot to make her scramble.

"Your backhand's getting lazy," she called out, diving for the ball.

"And you're still cheating on the score," he shot back, but there was no heat in it. Just the familiar rhythm of their banter, easier now than when they were married.

Another flash of lightning illuminated the court, closer this time. The sky bruised purple. Other players were already gathering their gear, but neither of them moved to leave.

Elena straightened, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand. "Remember when we got caught in that storm on our honeymoon? We hid in that orange grove and ate fruit until the rain stopped."

Marcus's racket lowered slowly. "I remember thinking I'd never been happier."

"Me neither," she said softly. "That was the last time, wasn't it?"

He nodded. They both understood what she meant—not the last happy moment, but the last true one. After that, there were promotions and arguments and months of silence, but never again that crystallized moment of being exactly where they belonged.

The first heavy drop of rain hit between them, splashing against the orange padel ball at her feet.

"One more point?" she asked, and he saw it too: the chance to end something properly, on their terms, instead of letting weather or circumstance decide.

"Your serve," he said, and as lightning shattered the sky above them, Elena tossed the ball into the air and served, perfect and true, one last game with the one person who'd always known how to match her.
