The Last Lifeline

zombiebullcable

Maya sat in her cubicle at 11:47 PM, the hum of the server room beneath the floor vibrating through the soles of her shoes. She felt like a zombie—not the flesh-eating kind from movies, but the corporate variety: hollowed out by quarterly targets, animated only by caffeine and the fear of missing a deadline.

Her phone buzzed. Daniel again.

'You coming home?' his text read.

'Soon. Just one more fix.'

She lied. There was always one more fix, one more deployment, one more emergency that couldn't wait until morning. The bullshit flowed in rivers here—her boss Tom had perfected the art of promising deliverables that existed somewhere between optimistic fantasy and outright lie. But Maya was the one who stayed late, translating his bull into working code.

The ethernet cable coiled beneath her desk like a black snake, its connector clicking as she jiggled it for the third time. The internet flickered. Of course it would fail tonight, when she needed to push the hotfix that would determine whether she still had a job tomorrow.

She crawled under the desk, following the cable to the wall jack. Loose connection. She pressed it in firmly, and the status light bloomed green.

For a moment, she just stayed there on the office carpet, staring at the lifeline that tethered her to this place. She could go home. She could let the deployment fail. She could tell Daniel the truth about how many nights she'd actually spent here instead of at her mother's bedside.

The cable hummed against her fingertips.

Maya stood up, grabbed her phone, and typed: 'I'm coming home now. Actually home.'

She left the deployment unfinished. The zombie stirred, hungry for something real.
