The Last Intelligence

spyspinachbullsphinx

Elena smoothed the silk napkin across her lap, watching Christopher across the candlelit table. She wasn't here for the wine list. As a former corporate **spy** turned private investigator, she'd spent sixteen years reading micro-expressions, and Christopher's was all wrong. He was selling his company's AI research to a competitor—she had the emails to prove it—but tonight wasn't about evidence. It was about the truth behind the evidence.

He reached across the table, his thumb brushing a piece of **spinach** from her lower lip. The gesture was intimate, practiced. Elena felt her chest tighten with something that had nothing to do with the job.

"You look tired, El," he said softly.

"Working a case that won't resolve itself."

"Maybe some cases aren't meant to be solved."

The waiter appeared, and they ordered in that comfortable shorthand of couples who'd shared too many meals. Elena realized with a jolt that she'd never investigated someone she actually liked. The job had always been straightforward: find the **bull**, expose it, collect the check. But Christopher wasn't hiding money or embezzling. He was protecting his mentally ill sister from being used as a test subject for the very AI his company was developing. The competitor he was "selling" to was actually a investigative journalist.

He was trying to save someone, and Elena was the **sphinx** at the gates, ready to destroy him with riddles he couldn't answer.

"The spinach," she said suddenly. "You always notice."

Christopher's eyes crinkled. "It's the little things that matter."

Elena made her decision. She signaled the waiter for the check, feeling something shift inside her—something like the ghost of the person she'd been before paranoia became her native language. She'd burn the emails. She'd tell her client the trail went cold. And tomorrow, she'd find out if Christopher wanted to get dinner somewhere without an agenda.

Sometimes the most intelligent thing you can do is stop knowing.
