The Last Inning

Margret smoothed a stray strand of gray hair from her client's forehead. Her fingers smelled of oranges—she'd sliced one for lunch, the citrus oil lingering on her skin like memory.

"You're quiet today," she said, clipping another section.

Arthur, eighty-three and shrinking, stared at his reflection in the salon mirror. His face had become a sphinx in recent years—inscrutable, weathered, carrying secrets he refused to share. His wife's funeral had been three mornings ago. He'd come in for a trim like nothing had changed.

"Margret," he said finally, "you ever notice how baseball players always look backward when they're trying to reach home?"

She paused, scissors hovering. "I suppose they're checking their progress."

"No." He turned to face her. "They're terrified of what's gaining on them."

The salon's air conditioning hummed. Outside, rain slicked the windows—water running down glass like time itself, relentless and unchecked. Margret thought of her own marriage, dead five years but still rotting in the backyard of her mind.

"My father coached baseball," Arthur continued. "Taught me that every pitch is a choice. Swing or don't. Most people spend their whole lives watching the ball go by."

"And you?"

"I swung." His voice cracked. "Missed."

Margret set down the scissors. "Arthur, you can still—"

"What? Hit a home run at eighty-three?" He laughed, dark and dry. "Margret, I spent forty years working in an office I hated, coming home to a woman who stopped loving me somewhere around 1998, all because I was too cowardly to admit I wanted to be a photographer. That's not swinging. That's letting the ball hit you."

The rain intensified. Someone had left an orange near the register; its scent filled the small room, bright and melancholy against the smell of shampoo and old hair.

"My first wife," Arthur said, touching his hair, now thin and white. "She had hair the color of this orange. She left me for someone who'd actually taken photographs of something besides his own reflection."

"You never told me you were married before."

"People tell hairdressers everything. That's the problem. We confess our sins while someone pretends to care about split ends."

Margret felt the truth of it settle in her chest. How many confessions had she heard? How many lives had she touched without really touching them?

"What would you photograph now?" she asked quietly. "If you could start over."

Arthur considered this. The sphinx's face softened. "The water."

"Water?"

"The ocean. How it destroys and creates, simultaneously." He looked out the rain-streaked window. "My late wife used to say water is the only thing that remembers everything. It holds the shape of whatever touches it."

"I'd photograph that," Margret said. "The way things mark us without permission."

Arthur met her eyes in the mirror. For the first time, she saw him—not just another client, not another haircut, but someone standing at home plate, realizing the game wasn't over yet.

"Maybe," he said, "it's not too late to swing."

"Maybe not."

"Margret?"

"Yes?"

"Next Tuesday. There's a gallery opening. Local photographers. Would you..."

"I'd like that."

She finished his haircut in silence. When she swept up the gray hair later, she found herself crying—not for Arthur, not for herself, but for all the balls they'd both let pass, all the swings they'd never taken. Outside, the rain had stopped. Something about the light had changed.
