The Last Honest Thing

Elena found the iPhone on the kitchen counter at 2 AM, screen glowing with a message she wasn't supposed to see. Her hands trembled as she picked it up—no password, no protection, just the raw evidence of her husband's betrayal laid bare in blue and white bubbles.

She'd been running on the treadmill when she'd forgotten her water bottle downstairs, her marathon training the only thing keeping her sane since Mark started working late again. The irony wasn't lost on her—all that running, going nowhere.

The spinach sat wilted in the colander, intended for tomorrow's breakfast smoothies, now looking as exhausted as she felt. Their cat, Buster, wound around her ankles, purring with that maddening indifference only animals possess, as if comforting her while simultaneously reminding her that in the grand scheme of things, this moment was just a blip in his nine lives.

Elena thought about the HDMI cable Mark had promised to fix last weekend—still dangling behind the TV, a visual representation of everything they'd left undone. How many times had she asked? How many times had he said "tomorrow"?

The phone buzzed again. Another message from someone named "Sarah" with a heart emoji. Elena's thumb hovered over the screen, tempted to respond, to destroy, to scream into the digital void. Instead, she carefully placed the phone back exactly as she'd found it.

She turned off the kitchen light. In the darkness, Buster's purring grew louder. "At least one of us is still here," she whispered to him. "At least one of us knows how to love something that doesn't require proof."

Tomorrow, she'd decide. Tomorrow, she'd either confront him or pack her bags or somehow find a way to forgive. But tonight, in the darkness of her own kitchen, Elena allowed herself the small, terrible freedom of pretending she didn't know anything at all.
